Michael’s Magnificent (but simple) Fruit Smoothies

Michael is totally addicted to his own fruit smoothies. He’s a swimmer and averages 4000-5000 meters of swimming each practice. For some perspective on that, 5000 meters is a 5K and 3.1 miles. This burns a LOT of calories. Most mornings, Michael makes himself a fruit smoothie. Sometimes this is breakfast and sometimes, this is just a prelude to breakfast!

Michael’s Fruit Smoothies

Place in the blender:

  • 1 3/4 c. plain yogurt
  • 3 handfuls of frozen blueberries (if needed, put more. Other frozen fruit works also)
  • 1 banana
  • 1 T. sugar
  • 1/4 c. milk

Blend thoroughly and guzzle. Share with your brothers if you must. Always share a little glass with your mom.

Mom’s note: I’ve been hearing about the great value of flax seed and plan to encourage Michael to incorporate a bit of that in each smoothie.

  1. Michael might benefit also from adding some protein powder to his smoothies. I utilized smoothies a lot in my culinary school days because I could whip it up and drink it in the car as I commuted. Protein powder help boost the nutritional aspect, as we all need protein to start the day right. And flaxseed, yes, get ye some! Buy them whole and grind just what you need before you use them. They can go rancid quickly after grinding and are no good whole….they just pass right through. A tbsp. or two is all he would need and the taste is so nutty and good.

I was a swimmer in HS. Man alive that is one tough sport! I would come home from practise and eat like I was dying. My mom was shocked at my food consumption, and this was when I was only about 100 lbs. anyway. *sigh* those were the days!
