This week I learned a nifty little trick to solve a perennial problem. Those unpopped popcorn kernels can break a tooth. I HATE biting into a popcorn ball or some caramel corn and crunching down on a hard little kernel. It seems that no matter how careful I am about popping, I always end up with some unpopped kernels.
This week I discovered a cool little trick. After the popcorn is popped, I dump it into a 6-quart plastic tub. After it cools, I shake and jiggle the tub (just like I’d do if I were trying to get the contents to settle in so I could fit more in the tub.) After just a few minutes of jiggling, the “old maid” kernels all end up on the bottom of the tub.
Then, and this is important, I scoop the popcorn I want to use OUT of the top of the tub, leaving those unpopped kernels on the bottom, a safe distance from my TEETH! I’ve been just amazed at how much “safer” the popcorn balls and caramel corn have been this year!

My idea is to only open microwave popcorn bags a tiny bit, and then shake them upside down over the trash can until the zombie-kernels fall out. Obviously doesn’t work with popcorn popped traditionally.

I use the Traditional
“Hot Air Popping machin”. I found the unpopped kernals are pushed out of the machine by the popping action of the adjacent kernal. So i hold my frying pan spatulla over the mouth of the popping machine to prevent the kernals from jumping out of the machine. The spatulla fits well over the machines inner basket and under its plastic cover. Once there is a stack of popped kernals in the basket then the unpopped kernals are kept down in the machine not in the collection bowl. The result is a bowl of popped corn with very few unpopped kernals. Does this make sense?
