Make your OWN Hummus!

I’ve been seeing more and more little tubs of hummus on potluck tables these days. Most of the time I restrain myself but every once in awhile I find myself saying, “You know, you can make your OWN hummus! You don’t have to buy those expensive little tubs!” Bad manners. I know. Still. It’s true. Hummus is easy to make, far cheaper when you make it at home, and super delicious.

Homemade Hummus

Laura wrote about hummus back in 2006 and I want to expand on that post a bit. We make a lot of homemade hummus around here and we think you should try it! Hummus is a great thing to serve at a potluck because it pleases the vegetarians, the lactose intolerant, and the gluten-free crowd. I love foods like that.

Homemade Hummus

Ingredients:

Make your own hummus

Fresh garlic and a bright red bell pepper are two must-have items for homemade hummus.

  • 2 cans of garbanzo beans (also called chickpeas), drained
  • 2 T. minced garlic (or 4-6 whole cloves)
  • 2 T. sesame oil
  • 1/4 c. lemon juice or to taste
  • 1 T. olive oil
  • 1 t. salt
  • 1/2 t. cumin (optional)
  • 1 roasted, peeled red bell pepper (optional)

Directions:

  1. After draining the chickpeas, place them in a blender or food processor with the garlic. Blend well.
  2. Add the rest of the ingredients and blend until smooth.
  3. Add the red pepper last if you choose to use it.
  4. Add any other spices that strike your fancy if you want. We especially like aleppo peppers, garlic powder, and herbs d’provence.

Here are the chickpeas and a few cloves of garlic in the food processor. There are MANY more garlic cloves hidden underneath.

Make your own Roasted Red Pepper Hummus with fresh roasted peppers

Roast your red peppers under the broiler or on the grill until the outer skin blackens.

We eat hummus with everything! It’s great on pita bread and tortilla chips. Hummus is the perfect vegetable dip. If you’re trying to reduce fat in your diet, consider using hummus instead of mayonnaise to mix with your tuna or eggs for sandwiches. Try using hummus in your deviled eggs for a different taste.

Make Your Own Garlic Hummus

This hummus has dangerous amounts of garlic in it; just perfect!

I do have to make a comment on the garlic. More of a confession really. That recipe up there? Well, that’s the high end of socially acceptable quantities of garlic. And truthfully, we use MUCH more garlic than that because we LOVE garlic. I also used cloves of grilled garlic as well as fresh whole garlic. And minced garlic. It was an aromatic evening here!

I also want to comment on the sesame oil. I’ve read many recipes that call for tahini; I’ve never used tahini in my hummus. I love the way that the sesame oil tastes, so I’m happy to stick with it. If you prefer tahini over sesame oil, go for it. It’s a very common ingredient; it just doesn’t happen to be one I use in this recipe.

This hummus is one of those staple foods that I try to keep in the fridge all the time. It’s as popular as peanut butter in my house!
