Baked French Toast Turtle Style

For some reason, I have more time during the summer months to make special breakfasts for my family. Usually breakfast is thoroughly self-serve at our house, but sometimes it’s nice to treat everyone to some great brunch foods. This Turtle Style Baked French Toast is my own invention and my family loved it!

The word “turtle” refers to the combination of chocolate and caramel sauces. No ACTUAL turtles were harmed in the making of this tasty breakfast dish!

Like I said, what makes this recipe so delicious and so special are the homemade caramel and fudge sauces. Of course you CAN just buy those if you’re in a real hurry, but I urge you to try these easy recipes. You’ll never look back! And, of course, you can use the leftover sauce on ice cream later in the day.

Make your sauces and set aside.

Whisk together your eggs, milk, sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla. Set aside.

Pour enough caramel sauce into the bottom of a 10×16 inch shallow baking dish.

Put a layer of bread slices on top of the caramel sauce. Pour half the milk and egg mixture over the bread.

Put another layer of bread on top of the first layer. Pour the rest of the egg-milk mixture over that. Sprinkle cinnamon sugar over the top.

At this point you can put the French toast in the fridge (assuming that you’re doing this the night before) or you can pop the dish in a 350 degree oven. Bake until the eggs and milk are no longer runny and have set up.

After you take the French toast out of the oven, use a squirt bottle to drizzle the chocolate sauce over the entire baking dish. Most of my breakfast eaters also opted to add a little extra chocolate sauce once they had a piece of French toast on their plate.

I used a dense, seedy whole grain bread, but any bread that you like will work for this. It’s also delicious with a crusty sourdough.
