Okay, nobody is actually going to make a convincing case that these tasty treats are health foods, but at least with homemade Halloween treats, we do know what’s in them. Years ago I gave up trying to provide super healthy alternatives to Halloween candy. Nope, October 31 is sugar day. (For many years, I had the rule that my kids could eat all the candy they wanted on that day. The catch was that on November 1, they turned over what was left. At least that contained the sugar crazies to one day on the calendar!)
This is the weekend to get ahead of the game and make some tasty treats for the family before October 31 arrives. (Because of course we can’t hand out homemade treats to kids coming to the front door, we need to make these treats for our own selves!)
Here are a couple of our favorites:
and of course, our new favorite treat….Candied Bacon, the Halloween Treat for grown ups.
It’s been a few years since we’ve been able to pull off our special Halloween tradition of hot cocoa and hot cider around the fire for the neighbors, but you can read about it here. The next time we live in a real neighborhood, you can bet that we’ll have that firepit out on the driveway!
